Letters to Dr. E. Gordon Gee at Ohio State addressing “I’d rather shower at Penn State than……!”

(Members respond to BoT Chairman Karen Peetz’s message to alumni on July 18, 2012 on the Freeh Report)

Members of Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship prepared letters to Ohio State University President Dr. E. Gorgan Gee in response to the Ohio State t-shirts and images which read “I’d rather shower at Penn State than root for Michigan!” or “I’d rather shower at Penn State than Cheer for the Wolverines”

    Dear Dr. Gee,

I’m both shocked and saddened to see the issue of child sexual abuse used as a joke at The Ohio State University. Not only is it tasteless in terms of portraying a child in the ad, it further dimishes the Big 10 relationship between Penn State and Ohio State.

We Penn State alumni take to heart all that has happened to our university and are actively working to make positive changes on many fronts, including the issue of child sexual abuse.

We expected more from our Big 10 brethern.

You and your university owe Penn State and the world a public apology.

    Sincerely,

Some joker also produced a shirt with the same message using the LSU/Alabama rivalry (and with a serious grammatical error on the shirt). The difference – that shirt has the Penn State logo. I’m not an attorney, but I believe using the logo without permission is against the law. These shirts are just disgusting – first for the victims (for whom everyone claimed to care so much) and second for Penn State’s reputation. The link to the LSU shirt is http://volnation.com/forum/around-ncaa/162435-new-anti-alabama-shirt.html. The comments on the volnation site about the LSU shirt are in my opinion quite revealing about what conference and what school(s) has a problem with its football culture. See Ralph Cindrich’s comments to Ryan McCombie’s letter to the BOT for more on the SEC. And the Board thinks we can move forward without rebutting the Freeh report and restoring Penn State’s reputation?
