Posting from Mobile App

1) Download the ‘WordPress’ app from Automattic for the iPhone. Install.
2) Click the pencil icon, in the middle of the bottom line.
3) Add a post title: try to keep it relatively short, up to 150 characters.
4) ‘Share your story here’: add your post. You can embed images as well.
5) Click on the daisy icon at the top right (between the eyeball and ‘post’):
— Choose Category: remember to choose ‘News’ if you want it to show up in the newsfeed, plus any other category. Choosing ‘Events’ also has it appear on the Events page.
— Add Tags: unfortunately you can’t select tags. But add one or two tags for the person, place or thing being posted about.
6) Click the eyeball to preview your post.
7) When you are happy with the post, click ‘Post’

Posting

Titles: Try to keep to no longer than the length of the title block. There’s the issue of people reading the titles on mobile phones, but also the major search engines will downgrade us for excessive length.
Excerpt: can be the first sentence or two of the post.
Comments: turned on for all posts, but you can manually turn them off for individual posts at bottom of post screen, below Excerpt.

Home Page

Slider: Displays posts with Category=’featured’. The word ribbon at the bottom is from the post ‘excerpt’.

  • Try to keep Featured Posts to 7 or less, it slows website load time.

News: Displays the 3 most recent posts with Category=’News’.
Tabs: Display 3 posts with Category=’tab’. Image displayed is the featured image. They must be posts, can’t be pages.

News Page

To get a post to show up in the News page, Category=’news’. It can also be Category=”news, event”, as long as one category is ‘news’. For posts with Category=”news”, the most recent 3 will show on the Home page, under News.

Event Page

To get a post to show up in the Event page, Category=’event’. It can also be Category=”news, event”, as long as one category is ‘event’.

Media Page

To get a PS4RS Media Statement to show up in the Media page, Category=’media statement’. It can also be Category=”news, event, media statement”, as long as one category is ‘media statement’.

Images

Featured Image: really only need for posts that you want in the slider on the Home page. Those images must be 980 wide x 520 tall.

Categories

Categories are more navigating the website than for search engine optimization (SEO). Categories should be things, like ‘News’, ‘events’, ‘media statements’, ‘letters’, ‘news articles’, etc, that can also be menu items. If we post a news article about Anthony Lubrano, the category would be ‘News article’ and the tag would be ‘Anthony Lubrano’. Posts can have multiple categories.
Note: ‘featured’ and ‘tab’ are special categories that make a post display in the Home Page slider or in the Home Page tab section (see Home Page).

Tags

Tags are a big part of the search engine function, so they should be search engine friendly. If a user types in ‘Frazier’ he will get results for types of pines, Scottish clans, a TV show, etc. If we tag ‘Ken Frazier’ we stand a better chance of getting a higher listing in the search results. If we also add ‘Merck’ to ‘Ken Frazier’, then Trustee Frazier’s dealings at Penn State will be in the search results. Posts can have multiple tags.

    • Names, titles, labels:>Names should be spelled out (Tom Corbett better than Corbett) and include a title if it’s important (Governor Tom Corbett best of all)
    • Search engine friendly.
    • Good: Penn State Board of Trustees (BOT): will get us listed when people search Penn State and Penn State Board, Penn State Board of Trustees and BOT
    • Not so good: BOT, PSUBOT: Will get us listed when people search bots which can be a horse parasite or a method of analyzing web data.
Categories + Tags = Search Results

With this format of Categories and Tags we can provide search results like:
Keith Masser + deposition = all the depositions Keith Masser has given
Karen Peetz + media statement = all media statements Karen Peetz is tagged in
